The Tour of Italy, otherwise known as the Giro d'Italia or "Giro", is a long distance road bicycle racing stage race for professional cyclists held over three weeks in May/early June in and around Italy. It is one of the three Grand Tours, and is part of the UCI World Ranking calendar. The most recent winner (2008) is Alberto Contador. This year edition (May 9-31) is the 100th anniversary of the tour which was originally started in 1909. Lance Armstrong (Astana Team) is participating for the first time. Whoa!
